Being 80 percent 100 percent of the time is better than being 100 percent 50 percent of the time. Consistency trumps occasional perfection.

A tapering quandary. Q. When I cut back in volume I tend to feel better and my daily pace increases. Is this okay? A. The fact that you are feeling better means that the taper is working. Don’t blow your race by running too fast during the taper. Save it for race day.

The last mile in a marathon can be a joyous celebration or a death march depending on how well you trained and how well you paced yourself. #RunWithHal

Frank Shorter won Olympic Gold and Silver in the marathon. He ran 2:10 back in 1972. His training? Just about the same thing every week, for months on end. Nothing fancy. Consistency is king. If you don't have consistency on the basics, whatever else you do doesn't matter.

A coach can only do so much to help an athlete improve. Ultimately, the success of an athlete comes down to their inner drive. Once they become intrinsically motivated, they can get the most out of their coach and reach their full potential.

For interval training: Most people go too hard on interval #1 and then aren't able to go hard enough on interval #6. If you are slowing down dramatically during interval training, you are practicing falling apart. For most, that should not be the goal. Learn how to pace.
