Now out in eLife – our epic journey into the heart of polyQ to deduce the structure of an amyloid nucleus. Spoiler: it’s not #LLPS. Even more surprising, oligomerization blocks nucleation!

Why is there so much disorder in eukaryotic proteins? What is its relationship with condensates? Why can some proteins be saved but others get degraded? After years in the making, we think we have answers and they're all connected. Excited to share a 🧵: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Day 26 of great biology papers. "Reconstitution of ribosome self-replication outside a living cell," by Kosaka et al. (2022). This paper marks the first time that scientists coaxed ribosomes to make other ribosomes entirely in a test tube. A step toward synthetic life. *******

I am like “OMG”! Whenever I watch this. Killer T cell release toxins to kill cancer cells. Would the accumulation of toxins in the nucleolus be a defense mechanism for cancer cells? Are toxins positively charged so they can enter into the nucleolus?

🎉It's finally out!! We show that intramolecular interactions in IDPs are strong enough to hold in the cell, but flexible enough to respond to cellular volume changes. A labor of love of many people, mainly recent graduate David Moses and Karina Guadalupe. shorturl.at/cdyR2

This is the end of the world as we know it, if this is reproducible! The new era of functional modeling has begun. I took a transcription factor with an unknown structure and folded it with its recognition sequence embedded in longer DNA. AlphaFold3 accurately positioned the

Congratulations to PhD student @LucasPhilipp1 on his first preprint! 🎉 He used Hi-C data to reconstruct the 3D conformations of dinoflagellate chromosomes 🦠🧬 And contrary to the prevailing model, they aren't liquid crystalline! 😯 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
