A resident and a fellow died by suicide this week. We must do a better job caring for our medical trainees as human beings. We must protect their mental health. We must improve the working conditions for all trainees. #meded

Being awake for 24 hours is the equivalent of having a blood alcohol content of 0.10%. This is higher than the legal limit for driving. If doctors aren’t fit to use their driver's license after 24 hours awake, should they be asked to use their medical license?

There’s high schoolers in front of me saying “I want to be married at 27 at the latest.. even that’s kinda old”. 🥲

As an M3 I remember watching the overnight surgery intern fall asleep at a computer mid-sentence while writing a discharge summary at 6am. That taught me everything I needed to know about 24 hour shifts.

Why do residents work so much? Tradition. In the 1890s, Dr. Halsted created the model for residency training--residents worked 24/7 with little pay. Sadly, he was using cocaine to stay awake & morphine to sleep, relying on residents working nonstop to cover up his addiction.

Absolutely no one can convince me COMLEX Level 3 is useful at all and is any representation of how I am or will be as a physician. It is simply another way for the NBOME to make money off of us. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
