Happy 58th birthday to Radio 1 which came on air on September 30, 1967, 6 weeks after the Government outlawed the pirates. As a schoolboy I thought the corporation was rather astute in hiring the best offshore DJs such as Tony Blackburn, Kenny Everett + Keith Skues at its launch

“Pick of the Pops” was my first introduction to pop music in 1962. This was pre-Beatles, two years before the pirates. It was the only radio programme that exclusively played pop records (no dance bands or studio versions). Even as a 7-year-old I thought : Why can’t we have more?

52 years ago today on October 8, 1973, licensed commercial radio began in the UK with the launch of LBC + its national news service IRN, my home in the late 80s and early 90s. Here’s the photocall outside its original HQ at Gough Square for the Golden Jubilee. I’m on the back row

I’d been a student journalist for just a fortnight. But it was a seismic change in British broadcasting, ending the BBC’s radio monopoly after 50+ years. I later spent almost 30 years with the Beeb but the arrival of a competitor was good for the corporation (and the listener).

The only playing connection I can find is that Jamal Lowe who was signed by Paul Cook from Portsmouth to play in the Championship in 2019-20, had 2 spells at Hemel Hempstead Town a decade ago, first on loan from Barnet and then for a short period before joining Hampton + Richmond

Paul Rowley (@paulrowleyradio) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Apologies. I did Hemel Hempstead Town a disservice. They are very handily placed in the play-off positions in Conference South.

51 years ago today on October 21,1974 Radio City (Liverpool) opened, the first UK 24-hour station outside London. I debuted that opening week, covering non-league football, becoming its politics editor in the 1980s before moving to Westminster for 34 years. A brilliant grounding.

Tom Edwards was Chief DJ aboard the offshore fort Radio City at the time of the killing of the station’s boss Reg Calvert in 1966, an incident which hastened the introduction of the Marine Offences Act the following year which outlawed the pirates. Great voice, proper broadcaster
