Today we commemorate Juneteenth, the celebration of emancipation from slavery in the U.S. In 1865, Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, where he read the Emancipation Proclamation and saw to it that the last remaining people who were enslaved were freed. 1/4
