PhD position alert: join a diverse team of palaeontologists to study the evolution of temnospondyls! The PhD project Naturkundemuseum Stuttgart will focus on bone microanatomy: lots of fun with thin-sections and CT-data in perspective. tinyurl.com/msvntnd9

“So Rod, what did you do at work today?” (an ongoing series) Ferrofluid is an oil that contains tiny magnetic particles, so it reacts to magnets, allowing us to see - at least in part - what magnetic fields look like. They’re normally invisible, so this is cool stuff. 🤓

Check out our latest paper on fossil feather preservation - really weird preservation in zeolites, in a pyroclastic flow! The research was led by UCC palaeontology postdoc Dr Valentina Rossi tinyurl.com/a6xhkm98

Billions of people have never seen the beauty of the Plankton. Share to show them and to also reveal that among it now, drifts our microplastic pollution. ZEISS Microscopy

Plag+Cpx poikilitic glomerophyre in lava from Guadalupe Island, Mexico. Very intriguing “xenolith” (or could it be cognate?).

A colleague asked for my help in polishing a thin section on short notice. I am quite busy, but who could say no to such a beautiful sample? 🤩 #ThinsectionThursday

Thin Section Thursday! 2-pyroxene granulite from the Ivrea-Verbano zone, with lozenges of high relief orthopyroxene (pink) and clinopyroxene, (green), and low relief, slightly altered plagioclase. In XP, the plagioclase has curved (deformed) twin boundaries. From Matt Kohn.
