I finally finished my first real pyrography project, Yuanchuavis kompsosoura and Ginkgo manchurica in life size! I coloured it with crayons to get a feel for how i want to stain it. I’ve yet to find a stain I like so it’s not completely finished but close enough to post!

I love this!!! Expanding the #AltText: the art, finely detailed, depicts a bird with a very long thin tail, perched on the end of a broken-looking branch with a twig bearing fan-shaped ginkgo leaves sprouting off it, crossing behind birdie's tail. 1/2

Stained and sealed, finally finished! Yuanchuavis kompsosoura and Ginkgo manchurica in life size. More paleopyrography projects on the way, we’ll see when I get those done. :)

Inspired by the apparent “grieving” of her dead newborn calf from an orca named Tahlequah in 2018, here is a plesiosaur mother drifting alone alongside her stillborn two-headed calf, and keeping it afloat before leaving the carcass behind to rejoin her pod.

I didn’t want to work on this anymore so I’m calling it done now. It looked better before I sealed it :( Life size Junornis houi male (top, right) and female (bottom, left) on a Taxaceae branch. Wood burning and wood stain on live edge Oregon oak slab.

This is part of some prep work for a piece I've been planning for a while. I may not be restoring every leaf in the final piece (as there's already over 120, and I still have probably another 50 more taxa to add), but hopefully it'll look nice (and be useful) when it's finished.

1/13 🚨🚨 I am so excited to present our new paper, six years in the making. Here, we provide the first strong evidence that there is a molecular mechanism behind the origins of living fossil lineages! #biology #science #paleontology academic.oup.com/evolut/advance…

Hey my medicine and public health people! How much do you know about eugenics? Just old pseudoscience, you say? Any idea how much it continues to influence us? Answer: A LOT. I taught a class on the history of eugenics and public health today. Here's what we covered: 🧵

Congratulations on all the researchers who got published, but ohhh I do not feel good about AI as the cover art. This should worry scientific artists and the sciences in general that journals are starting to consider this kind of stuff acceptable.

I'm leaving Meta and Twitter and will no longer be posting my art on either of these platforms. My existing art will be deleted or archived soon. You can find me instead on Tumblr and Bluesky! I can be found under palerelics on both. I also have a website palerelics.com
