Up from the depth, like a primordial monster, the submarine rises to charge her batteries, and "air out" under the protective blanket of night. The 1943 painting called, “Watercolor on Board” was a piece by Georges Schreiber for the WWII exhibit “The Silent Service.”

#OTD in 1947 Ensign John W. Lee, Jr. became the first African-American with a commission in the regular Navy and served on board USS Kearsarge (CV 33) one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers completed during or shortly after WWII for the United States Navy. ⚓

March 27, 1915 - F-4 was conducting submarine maneuvers off Honolulu when she took on water and sank at 306 feet, just 1.5 miles from the harbor. Despite efforts to locate the boat and save her crew, all 21 perished making F-4 the 1st US Navy commissioned submarine lost at sea.
