On February 28th 1944, USS Bowfin began her 4th war patrol in the Celebes Sea.

#OTD in 1942 - President Franklin D. Roosevelt designates Adm. Ernest J. King to serve as the Chief of Naval Operations, as well as the Commander-in-Chief, United States Fleet (he was appointed on Dec. 30, 1941).

#OTD in 1947 Ensign John W. Lee, Jr. became the first African-American with a commission in the regular Navy and served on board USS Kearsarge (CV 33) one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers completed during or shortly after WWII for the United States Navy. ⚓

Did you know that the U.S. Navy has a Navy Marine Mammal Program? Homeported on Point Loma since the 1960's, the Navy's Marine Mammal Program trains dolphins and sea lions to perform tasks such as ship and harbor protection, mine detection, and equipment recovery.🐬

#OTD in 1944 after tracking a different five-ship convoy for six hours, Bowfin made a night surface attack and sank two cargo vessels and damaged another before expending all of her torpedoes.

March 27, 1915 - F-4 was conducting submarine maneuvers off Honolulu when she took on water and sank at 306 feet, just 1.5 miles from the harbor. Despite efforts to locate the boat and save her crew, all 21 perished making F-4 the 1st US Navy commissioned submarine lost at sea.
