[Interview] We are “very far” from what vulnerable communities need for climate adaptation, says Adaptation Fund head, Mikko Ollikainen. According to Ollikainen, private finance has a role to play in bridging the gap, but public finance will need to continue playing a big role

It is always sad to bid farewell to one’s team members, but often also cause for celebration, and never more so than when sending off spectacular Mahamat Assouyouti @assouyouti from Adaptation Fund to serve his country Chad 🇹🇩as Economy Minister. Couldn't be prouder. Bon courage!

It was a pleasure to welcome new World Meteorological Organization Secretary General Prof. Celeste Saulo at Adaptation Fund offices today, and discuss how we can together address mounting challenges of climate impacts in developing countries, through climate services, early warnings, concrete investments.

Adaptation to climate change cannot be successful if it doesn’t specifically take into account different adaptation needs of women and men. For us in Adaptation Fund doing this in our programming is not only a gender equality issue but also crucial for aid effectiveness #IWD2024

The best way to explain it is to show how it’s done. The Adaptation Fund has been organizing country exchanges to enable developing country practitioners see each other’s adaptation solutions with their own eyes. The one in Central Java, Indonesia, last June was a great example!

Having just returned from a successful Adaptation Fund board meeting that charted the Fund’s work ahead in key areas, I was delighted to catch up among heads of climate funds today on the things we can and must do together, on a joint action plan

It was a pleasure to meet the Adaptation Fund evaluators, AF Technical Evaluation Reference Group, for their annual in-person meeting in Prague this week, and to discuss how to address challenges in evaluating adaptation to climate change!

Today, the Chairs of the Governing Boards of the Adaptation Fund, CIF, Global Environment Facility (GEF), and Green Climate Fund were convened for the very first time! Thank you all for your support and guidance as we develop our Joint Action Plan #COP29.

It was a pleasure to meet H.E. Minister Mukhtar Babayev, President of COP29 Azerbaijan and to hear how adaptation finance is at heart of COP29. Was pleased to share Adaptation Fund experience of keeping access to finance simple! #BonnClimateConference

Just had a productive bilateral meeting w/ Adaptation Fund Head Mikko Ollikainen at #SB60. We discussed Locally Led Adaptation (#LLA) & youth leadership. Highlighted the Char conference on LLA, the #AdaptationPact between Bangladesh & France & future collaboration with AF at #COP29.

Developing countries’ climate finance needs are growing rapidly. Pleasure to meet Alvaro Lario Alvaro Lario in Rome today and discuss how Adaptation Fund and International Fund for Agricultural Development can together scale up support for developing countries building their climate resilience.

Really pleased to meet Ibrahima Diong, ED of new Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage. Adaptation and L&D are two sides of same coin. We had a super inspiring discussion on how Adaptation Fund and FRLD can collaborate to help developing countries address climate change impacts.

“The climate crisis is here. We can’t postpone protection. We must adapt – now.” – António Guterres UN Environment Programme's new #AdaptationGap Report provides a science-based assessment of the global progress of adaptation to the escalating climate crisis & its impacts.

AF & Fund for responding to Loss and Damage signed a letter of intent to leverage collective expertise to create scalable solutions that empower communities & countries facing rising climate impacts. Ibrahima Cheikh Diong & Mikko Ollikainen stress the importance of maximizing resources to ensure no one is left behind

Displaced individuals are among most vulnerable to impacts of climate change. The new MOU between Adaptation Fund and UNHCR helps highlight the compounded challenges people in developing countries face, and to provide support in those complex situations. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Filippo Grandi

Delighted to host Mikko Ollikainen and the team from Adaptation Fund in #albania . Your partnership is much valued by #undp and together with the Gov of the Western Balkans we are doing critical work.

This week, I had opportunity to witness firsthand the impactful regional project funded by Adaptation Fund and implemented by UN Development in Albania, Montenegro, and North Macedonia. This initiative aims to assist local communities and governments in adapting to the escalating threats
