Last night’s vote could NEVER have resulted in forcing the government to hold a new enquiry (even assuming hundreds of Labour MPs voted for it) because that wasn’t the function of the vote. It would simply have stopped the Children’s Wellbeing Bill from proceeding. Pure politics
