Textbooks say multipass membrane proteins get into the ER via the same channel used for secretion, but it turns out that they actually recruit their own dedicated translocon that latches the secretion channel shut. Exciting collab with Luka, Min &co www2.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/pathway-for-ma…

Massive news: eLife to abolish accept/reject decisions: papers will just be “peer reviewed”. Others can argue about this, but lots of interesting consequences. 1/9 elifesciences.org/articles/83889

With lots of new data from the pre-print! I think we finally have a (partial) answer to how alpha-helical proteins get inserted into the mitochondrial outer membrane in human cells. science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Picking up ~ANOTHER PRIZE~ for this very good boy! He came second place in a scurry competition at a gundog fair…and not just the novice round, but the advanced round! Well done, Talisker! 👏👏👏 😊

I am ecstatic to finally share our work in nature where we investigated BlaR1, a signalling protein that controls resistance to β-lactam antibiotics in the major human pathogen, Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus. #MRSA #AMR #cryoEM nature.com/articles/s4158… (1/n) 🧵

You're not seeing double! Many ABC proteins are proposed to dimerize. Here Sarah C. Bickers showed that Ycf1p forms a dimer upon proteolytic cleavage and determined a 1st ABC transporter dimer structure. Collaboration w/ @RubinsteinJohn and Samir Benlekbir biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

As it turns out, the secretion channel Sec61αβγ has a fourth subunit, RAMP4—long overlooked because it falls off in detergent. It holds the pore open and completes the lumenal funnel. This plus exciting structures of TRAP, uL22, & more are now online: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Check out our latest paper where we identify a new C-terminal export signal in flagellar Type III secretion substrates which provides further evidence against a subunit capture/chain mechanism for flagellar assembly. doi.org/10.1128/mbio.0…
