Last week the City Council received a report on Mayor Frey’s ongoing evictions of encampments. Instead of recommendations on how to get people into homes, Frey’s staff doubled down on a political narrative to justify brutalizing unsheltered people.

Housing First is the national consensus about effectively reducing homelessness–center the humanity of unsheltered people and prioritize housing & support services. Public health experts, the Biden Admin and the City of Saint Paul are all adopting a Housing First approach.

Countless people are one emergency away from losing their home. Many of us have loved ones who are or have been unsheltered. Residents want humane and effective solutions. Encampment evictions have been completely ineffective in everything except traumatizing people.

The verdict comes as United Nations specialists arrive in Minneapolis today. The group, which was formed after George Floyd’s murder, has been in the US this week looking into laws and police use of force for a report to be submitted to UN Human Rights Council later this year.
