40 years ago the late Archer Maclean brought this into the ZZAP! office. We were amazed. And not surprising, really, as it was and still is the greatest shooter ever released on C64. It's smooth, supremely playable, and beautifully tuned. Hasn't dated a day. Total all-time great.

40 years ago, Firebird was heavily marketing Elite and basically making the game a huge success off the back of stellar reviews. In contrast, this was Acorn's highly unconvincing wall-of-text marketing effort six months earlier, which was nowhere near as effective.

This 40-year old Activision ad is very reminiscent of Sega's later Master System cartridge box aesthetic. Kinda cool, and a reminder that Activision used to make all sorts of interesting stuff before it turned into whatever the eff it is today.

40 years ago, I was playing C64 Rescue on Fractalus, one of Lucasfilm Games' first works. It sent players on a mission to rescue stranded pilots from a hostile planet. Its fractal landscapes were groundbreaking, and the game packed some very cool surprises. Really loved it!
