There is an Enhanced Risk (level 3 of 5) for severe weather this evening into tonight. The main threats will be large hail (1-2”+ in diameter) and tornadoes, some of which could be strong. Heavy rain and flooding is also possible late this evening into Wednesday.

The severe threat is not done yet! We are watching a line of storms that is moving into our forecast area. While the tornado threat is lower, it is NOT zero. Embedded areas of rotation will be possible within the line of storms. Heavy rain and damaging winds also possible.

There is an Enhanced Risk of severe storms tonight, with the greatest threat of severe storms from 6pm to 9pm EDT from west to east with all severe hazards possible. Locally heavy rainfall possible overnight, especially south of US 24. Cooler for Friday.

Strong to severe thunderstorms have developed across northeast Illinois and are moving east northeast around 30 mph. These storms have a history of producing of producing some large hail and have the potential to produce damaging wind gusts.

Storms are expected to develop across northeast Illinois this afternoon and shift across the region late this afternoon into this evening. The greatest threats are scattered damaging wind gusts of 60-70 mph and isolated tornadoes in the 5pm to 11pm EDT timeframe.

While some passing showers are possible tonight and perhaps on Monday, they’re light enough to not add to current flooding. Dry, especially for Tuesday, but also, cool. Consider taking steps to protect cold-sensitive plants with early Tuesday AM temps in the 20s.

After one more freezing night ahead, temperatures trend warmer into the 50s and 60s for highs over the next several days. A few locations could get into the low 70s on Thursday. Rain and storms return on Thursday and Friday but severe weather is NOT expected at this time.

A strong cold front will bring thunderstorms tonight, followed by breezy winds, and cooler conditions for this weekend. Frost will be possible Saturday night and again Sunday night. Plans should be made to protect cold-sensistive plants. Warmer weather will return mid-week.
