Keeping with the fun/energizing science, today I got to teach a student to dissect mealybugs. Possibly the most challenging insect dissection that I have ever done. Last image is a video of the female who was hella mad I took her ovisac. Purple hemolymph is a challenge 🤷

The early stink bug gets the…we’re honestly not sure what these stink bugs think they’re going to get emerging in late February. Perhaps the earliest emergence from overwintering for this species ever recorded by NCSU Entomology & Plant Pathology student Kevin Orta

Sampling vineyards in northern Virginia for spotted lanternfly with Tracy Leskey’s crew Torrie and John. Tons of these little devils. Note how many egg masses on the poles.

Spotted lanternfly seemed to survive the winter just fine in Virginia. Seeing lots of nymphs. Inspect your grapevines.

Swept up some #bollworm looking for stink bugs in wheat. Rare but I do see them sometimes this early in wheat and corn. Guessing these are southern migrants

Very thankful to Ben & Demian for helping with the spotted lanternfly bio pesticide efficacy experiments. These take so much work, potted tree of heavens, collect 500 wild bugs, infest the cages, mix the treatments, spray the treatments, etc.
