Today in 1964 the Ford Mustang debuted at the World's Fair in New York. It was unveiled by Henry Ford II and sold for $2,300 ($224,667.57 today). Advertised as the working man's Thunderbird, it would go on to sell more than 400,000 cars in the first year of production.

Today in 1800, The Library of Congress was established. The first books wouldn't arrive until 1801. The library itself wouldn't open until 1897, almost 100 years after it was established.

Today in 1959 the St. Lawrence Seaway opened. The St. Lawrence connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean to facilitate transport of goods.

Happy independence day to Sierra Leone, who received their independence from the United Kingdom today in 1961.
