Perfect cakes are out of this world. Cakes less than perfect are absolute trash for some reason. There’s no in between.

I think the “let yourself be bored” advice is for people who are not naturally introspective or who have just been too busy to stop and think. If I sit and do nothing, nothing happens. No thinking, insights, or revelations occur. There is no healing rest bc boredom is painful.

The "city feeling" is, as far as I can tell, purely aesthetic. It can be achieved convincingly in sub-100k towns by a combination of architectural details, density, lighting, and structures from the pre-single-use-zoning era. Utica (64k) and Plattsburgh (19k) come to mind.

A survey of 9000 adults under 55 by the Institute for Family Studies found that an overwhelming majority of people in every state and of every political orientation prefer single family homes. "Almost nobody in America wants to raise their family in an apartment."
