On this day in 1933, the Nazis win the German general election with just 43.9 per cent of the popular vote. Despite failing to secure a majority, Hitler moves swiftly to transform the country into a totalitarian dictatorship.

On this day in 1946, Winston Churchill gives a speech at Missouri's Westminster College in which he famously declares that “an 'Iron Curtain' has descended" across Europe. The former prime minister's words herald the beginning of the Cold War. #OTD

On this day in 1770, a mob attacks a group of British soldiers outside of the Massachusetts assembly. The redcoats open fire killing five. Thanks to an incendiary engraving of the event by Paul Revere, the "incident on King Street" will go down in history as the Boston Massacre.

On this day in 1936, Hitler openly defies the Treaty of Versailles by ordering his army to reoccupy the Rhineland. Europe's powers do little to stop him. "If the French had marched in, we would have had to withdraw with our tails between our legs," Hitler will later confess.

On this day in 1945, Tokyo is in ruins following an overnight incendiary raid by American B-29s. As many as 100,000 have perished in the inferno -- more than either the Hiroshima or Nagasaki bombings. It will be remembered as history's deadliest air attack.

This day in 1942, General MacArthur left the Philippines and his forces, which were surrounded by the Japanese. Once arrived in Australia he stated: "I shall return". The reaction of his escape was mixed, with many American and Filipino troops feeling bitter and betrayed. #WW2

With Lend Lease, America was economically committed to Allied Victory whether we were militarily committed or not. Of course, Einstein had already informed FDR the Nazis were trying to build an Atomic Bomb, so there's that too . . .

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am regretfully cancelling this Friday's Patriot Open Mic Night out of concern for the over all health and safety of everyone involved. Be clean, be smart, be aware of and care for others. We can always come together to share our love of creativity later.

On this day in 1941, the U.S. Army establishes the 99th Pursuit Squadron, America's first all-black flying unit. They'll go down in history as the "Tuskegee Airmen" -- a reference to the group's Alabama training field.

On this day in 1861, America's Civil War begins as Confederate guns open fire on Fort Sumter. No one dies in the two-day bombardment, but hundreds of thousands will perish in the resulting four-year conflict.
