YouTube is one of the most underutilized tools for filmmakers. It accounts for 11.1% of all watch time - which is more than Netflix (8.5%). Warner Bros is even releasing classic titles to YT. If you’re trying to build an audience for your work, there is no better place.

There’s no right way to be a director. You can be a camera expert, or have never touched one. You can obsess over dialogue, or let the actors improvise. You could storyboard, or work without a shot list. Just do whatever is most intuitive to you. There are no rules.

Filmmakers: Don’t burn bridges. The longer you work in this industry, the smaller it gets.

Edit a cut of your film in black and white. Re-write your screenplay based on memory only. Direct a scene without your shot list. See your art through a new prism and great things will happen.

The only way to become a better director is to make more films. And the best way to make more films is to green light your own micro-budget projects.

Before you make a good film you have to give yourself permission to make a bad one.

The small “unnecessary” details in your film are everything. If you keep cutting them in the name of efficiency the end result will be generic and devoid of artistic integrity.

If it’s harder for you to not make a film than to make one, you’re a filmmaker.
