Peace in our time πŸŒŒπŸ˜€ Life advice: seriously, just take the time to go see the night sky from a truly dark site at least once in your life. It is unreal. #milkyway #galaxy

The Shane 120 inch telescope at Lick Observatory This was the first time I've gotten to go and see a truly huge telescope, and it was so impressive! Stay tuned for more images from the trip πŸ˜€πŸ”

#Saturn! πŸŒ πŸ”πŸ˜€ A while back I shared this Saturn data but with the color left as recorded by the camera which looked more orange (a lot of which was from the wildfire smoke causing excess light dispersion). Here is the same data reprocessed to correct the color.

Galileo was the first person to view the moons of Jupiter. I setup my gear different that usual (this time with far less resolution) to try and recreate Galileo's original observations and show you what he saw over 400 years ago. More details: instagram.com/nightskyflying

What's up with this one weird cloud? I thought it looked like a submarine! Oh, also Jupiter, Saturn, and the super bright Moon are in this shot too πŸ˜€ #saturn #jupiter #moon

#Ganymede and #Europa! 🀯 To the average viewer, these might look like just fuzzy little dots, but to an astronomer, they're amazing. This is a shot of Europa (L) and Ganymede (R) as they appeared to pass by one another while orbiting Jupiter. details at instagram.com/nightskyflying

#Telescope dreams πŸ˜€β   People build some amazing things! This is the 36" refractor at Lick Observatory from my tour that I took. One of the workers is seen here setting it up for our viewing session before the lights were turned off. It was so impressive! #LickObservatory

#Saturn against the stars! I like to take my planet shots and sometimes superimpose them onto a starfield. Here is some recent Saturn data doing just that πŸ˜€

The clearest night I've ever had with #Jupiter! I'm a little blown away to think that this is actually an image that I took in my backyard because it really did end up coming out like something you could see in a science book πŸ˜€ More details at: instgram.com/nightskyflying

Milkyway in the desert! β€‹πŸŒŒπŸŒ΅ Things are so peaceful in the desert at night. Once the world settles in for the evening, the air gets very still and quiet. Sounds and lights carry on seemingly forever, and the stars are so plentiful that you just can't help but stare πŸ˜€

View from the top, at Lick Observatory Astronomers used to live on the mountain top as a little community (pretty logical if you think about life before the internet). I suspect I would have enjoyed living in a little tight-knit community like that, especially given the views πŸ˜€

Solo under the #milkyway! 🌌 Just me and about a billion of my closest friends, having a sleep over. The hardest part is actually being willing to admit that I need to go to sleep at some point and to shutting my eyes πŸ˜€

Have you ever considered how empty space is? Look at #Callisto (far right) a million miles away from #Jupiter (4x further than our moon is to Earth, btw). And in the space between? Just nothing. Keep in mind how rare anything is in the universe, & be thankful for our world πŸ˜€

This is #Io, the most volcanically active body in our solar system and one of Jupiter's Galilean moons πŸŒ πŸ”πŸŒ‹ For reference, Io is just a little bit larger than our Moon. I might have even got a little surface detail, but tough to tell. Either way, kind of exciting! πŸ˜€ #Jupiter
