This excellent thread gives a thoughtful conversation between @TracyZager Liesl McConchie on the difference between, relationship between, and value of fluency and automaticity. I highly recommend a look!

Love hearing kids make sense of a puzzle from "Without Words" - they notice & wonder so many awesome things & make so many connections! And I love puzzling on these too! Shared it with my fam and my colleagues! Still puzzling on how many for 6 dots! James Tanton

Dad: We're going to play Face Off again, but a version with 2 dice instead of 1. What do you notice about the board? Me: It has more numbers. Dad: Why do you think that is? Me: I don't know. Dad: How will I roll and get 12? Me: ...Oh! We're going to add the dice together.

Dad: Today we're going to play a new game where we roll 2 dice and put a tile above the sum. The first sum to get 5 tiles wins. Which number do you predict will win? Me: 7. Dad: Why do you think that? Me: Because I roll 7 a lot. Dad: Ah, you're remembering from the other game.

Dad: Today we're going to play Big Pig, which is a variation of Pig. This time we'll be rolling 2 dice. (mid-game) Dad: What's the difference between our scores right now? Me: ...30?

Dad: Ok, if I can get at least 15 on this turn, I can win. (rolls 6 and 2) Dad: 8 is not enough, so I'm rolling again! (rolls double 1s) Dad: What a lucky roll! I'll bank it. Good game!

Have you checked out the coherence map? It's an amazing tool for teachers, coaches, supervisors, and curriculum designers. To teach a standard well you need to know where it started, where it is in the sequence, and also where it goes in the future. #iteachmath

Here are 4 sketchnotes of the 4 toolkits from Peter Liljedahl's #thinkingclassroom. These versions now have a better citation of the book. I hope they inspire discussion about how to make learning more accessible to more students! drive.google.com/drive/folders/… #onted #destreaming

Have students that struggle to understand expectations on their assignments? Even with rubrics students always questioned me. I tried this Cupcake Analogy I learned from a coworker out this past school and it HELPED SO MUCH. Template: canva.com/design/DAEu0qZ…
