I've heard from two readers who read MENEWOOD without knowing it was the second in a sequence—both enjoyed it a lot. And both then bought HILD, read that, and reread MENEWOOD with deeper understanding. So that's how I recommend it now: read MENEWOOD; it makes sense on it's own.

I appreciated that The Hild Sequence by Nicola Griffith featured a variety of complex and interesting characters who value and cultivate skill in the fiber arts. Furthermore, pattern making/comprehension is featured as both a literal and symbolic skill of mythic proportions.

This is still happening today. Just look at the Oscars: stories about women don't win major awards. Stories about women aren't seen as 'big' or 'important' or 'serious'.
