As part of my preparations before heading to Boston, I spent a great morning at the National Archives. One of the most interesting documents I found was this copy of the 1789 Consular Commission from King George III for the first British Consul in Boston Thomas Macdonogh. 🧵

Promoting UK-US exchange 🇬🇧🇺🇸 Last night we hosted visiting parliamentarians Dan Carden, Gill Furniss MP, Navendu Mishra, and The Lord Ross Kempsell as part of the annual British-American Parliamentary Group visit with WorldBoston and IVLP.

Just like that, four incredible years come to an end. It has been the honour and privilege of my life to represent the UK in New England. We fly home tonight with hearts full of all the friendships and memories we made in this very beautiful, very special part of America. 🇬🇧🇺🇸

Just in case anyone tries to convince you a career in the Foreign Office is all glamour, here I am at 11.30pm typing up my packing list and writing luggage tags for my air freight on an ironing board.

This was one of my favourite evenings in Boston so far. Slightly in awe of all the imagination and drive behind the three shortlisted projects. Huge congratulations to everyone involved in making this event such a success. Looking forward to next year already.

It was a pleasure to meet Governor Maura Healey Maura Healey on Friday to discuss the UK-Massachusetts relationship. Lots of potential to work together on issues from clean energy and climate to tech and life sciences.

It’s the season for giving, and we’re giving back! Yesterday, consulate staff volunteered at Mass Audubon helping to build and maintain fences at the Farm at Moose Hill ☀️ The farm is an essential part of food access, sovereignty, and security in Massachusetts 🥬

Happy 234th birthday to UK Consulate Boston. On this day in 1790, George Washington signed the exequatur agreeing to the appointment of Thomas Macdonogh as Consul within Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire. He was the first British Consul appointed in the US. 🧵

For many years, we thought that the Consulate was established in 1817, misled by this note from 1961. Glad to have restored Macdonogh to his rightful place as the first CG here.
