I've noticed that a lot of American academic CVs will list professional society memberships. I've never considered doing this unless I was a committee member or did something useful. What's the reason for listing them otherwise - what's the upside for someone evaluating the CV?

Can't quite believe I'm writing this: Today, 150 African workers behind ChatGPT, TikTok and Facebook voted to unionize at a landmark meeting in Nairobi. These AI workers are invisible, underpaid, and the backbone of the tech in all our pockets: time.com/6275995/chatgp…

Even the new Twitter can deliver when cool helpful people are on here. And while copyright libraries exist. Now I have a copy of this and a copy of the Halverson prehension paper this is based on. Just in case that information is helpful to anyone else on an academic hunt...

I listened to this today & it was nice to hear someone way more qualified than me articulate my view that people without children - like me! - benefit massively from childcare that others provide & pay for. My view is that it should be subsidised (also if provided by parents).

In fantastic bird news, there's a duck nesting in a huge planter outside my work building. The caretaker spotted her. Now I'm using the side door to avoid disturbing her because expectant mothers deserve a stress-free life.

And while we all know some derivative writers, the ballpen works even without the uncredited written input of millions of people.

$5 billion for some dead monkeys and overblown claims. How much are actual BCI companies with feasible aims and real proof of concept worth, versus this Theranos-level crap?
