Kilmurry-born Dr Elsie Murphy took the stage while a 1923 Civil War internee in Kilmainham Gaol, where she was medical officer to republican women inmates. She grew up in a strongly republican home, her father an IRB circle centre, her mother telling tales of Famine and Fenians.
