On avg, about 30-50% of annual precipitation for west coast states occur in a few AR events. A strong AR transports an amount of water vapor roughly equivalent to 7.5–15 times the average flow of liquid water at the mouth of the Mississippi River, which can cause major flooding.

Debris flows in our area are most common, but not limited to recent burn areas. They can occur with little or no warning sometimes within less than 15 minutes of the onset of heavy rain. For more info from the California Geological Survey: bit.ly/3UTVymp

We can look at the USGS gage record and compare the 2017 peak flood flow to other floods on the Truckee near Reno. Reservoirs on the Truckee help reduce flows into Reno. The 1950 and 1955 floods predated Prosser and Stampede reservoirs and partially motivated their construction.
