NEW: DPS sent troopers to the University of Texas today at the 'request' of Gov. Greg Abbott, the agency confirms in a statement, 'in order to prevent any unlawful assembly and to support UT Police.'

Update: At least 17 people have been arrested so far. Officers have threaten to use tear gas on the protesters gathered.
