Beached bird survey ✅ Seabirds have vacated the cliffs & no carcasses to report. A whole black bin liner full of litter removed, mostly empty plastic bottles & cans, monofilament plus loads of rubber off lobster pots. Sunday, 29 September 2024. Another Northeast England Beached Bird Surveys survey on the NE coast of England. Here, I sadly show six individually bagged fulmars collected today from the northern section of Whitley Bay beach (Tyne and Wear) – part of a wreck of this super seabird species. @NENature_ Northumberland & Tyneside Bird Club

Fri, 27 Sept 2024. Late pm Northeast England Beached Bird Surveys survey at Tynemouth (Tyne and Wear): low tide, 11 degrees. Six beached & intact fulmar corpses were collected, with remains of another seen. This was part of an unhappy fulmar wreck along our NE England coastline (bird flu has been identified).

Wed, 20 Nov 2024. I worked with Elayna Daniels on razorbills at NCL Dove Marine Lab. The photograph shows a first-winter male found in Northumberland by @desiccated_matt in Oct 2020. The cause of death was inconclusive. We collected feathers and tissues. Francis Daunt Jon Green

Thursday, 5 Dec 2024. Analysis of a razorbill begins NCL Dove Marine Lab. This bird was collected Feb 2021 by Peter Collins along the Whitburn to Roker coastline (Tyne & Wear). A first-year female, emaciated. Assisting with necropsy was volunteer Julia Black (in photo by Dan Turner)

Thursday, 5 Dec 2024. Beached Bird surveyor / volunteer Jane Hardy (Crazy seal lady/ BDMLR Medic) travelled many miles this icy morning to help NCL Dove Marine Lab. Jane helped by recording, labelling, bagging, weighing, etc. We processed a first-year male razorbill, found Feb 2021 by surveyor Peter Collins.

Following Storm Darragh (Dec 2024), beached bird surveyor Tom Patterson found remains of five little auks on the Northumberland shore. He collected two intact specimens with care in case of bird flu (photo: Tom with two bagged little auks). @NENature_ Northumberland & Tyneside Bird Club Northumberland Wildlife Trust

Wednesday, 22 January 2025. It is great that we are able to progress our beached bird studies, currently with collaboration from Elayna (Liverpool University). We are currently processing historic razorbills. Francis Daunt Jon Green @NENature_ Northumberland & Tyneside Bird Club Northumberland Wildlife Trust

Friday, 24 Jan 2025. Working NCL Dove Marine Lab this week we processed 8 razorbills in detail and gathered many tissues for further study. The days passed well in good company. It is always great to be there! Such a marvellous location. (Photo: 21 Jan 2025). @NENature_ Northumberland Wildlife Trust
