A thoughtful piece from Crain's Chicago Business re: what meaningful, politically feasible #redistricting reform in advance of 2021 looks like. "Setting some clear redistricting criteria into law in this year would be a practical and effective first step." #HB140NC chicagobusiness.com/opinion/legisl…

"The reins of political power in the U.S. for the next decade could be determined in this year’s elections — not necessarily by who wins the presidency, but by thousands of lower-profile contests for state legislative seats across the country." washingtonpost.com/politics/white… #HB140NC

"Iowa saves its taxpayers millions of $s in legal bills bc the 2 political parties don’t fight over districts in court. Iowa’s maps also have produced more competitive elections, which hold incumbents of all stripes more accountable to voters." #HB140NC madison.com/wsj/opinion/ed…

Read more about how political orgs (both Rs & Ds) are compiling precinct-level election data to match it w/ census data so that they can predict how certain neighborhoods will vote...& draw districts accordingly. journalnow.com/news/elections… Enough is enough! It's time for reform!

Looking to our northern neighbor & its redistricting efforts: "The proper response to unlawful excess [of extreme partisan gerrymandering] is a restoration of reasonable order not the deployment of unlawful excess in the opposite direction." Well said! 🇺🇸 dailypress.com/opinion/vp-ed-…

The arguments put forth by these #biz leaders on the need for #redistricting reform in VA are applicable to NC: "Partisan gerrymandering is an affront...to the public’s sense of fair play, & creates a dysfunctional system of governance that must change. bizjournals.com/washington/new…

On this day in 1812, Gov. Elbridge Gerry approved voting maps for the state of MA that were drawn to favor his party. Although this wasn't the 1st time in US history that such behavior had occurred, the eponymous portmanteau "gerrymander" has become this Founding Father's legacy.

Friendly reminder that Big Data (like what type of alcohol you drink) can be used to predict your voting tendencies. And, an even friendlier reminder that #HB140NC prohibits the use of such data in the #redistricting process!

VA is getting closer! 👏 “When it comes to bipartisan redistricting, this is the only vehicle that’s moving fwd this year,” said Del. O’Quinn, “& it won’t move again til 2030.” virginiamercury.com/2020/03/02/red… Let's go #NC! We can't afford 2 wait til 2030 for our next chance, either!

Not sure who needs to hear this, but... 20 ago when data was sanitized 4 personal identifiers, 87% of people's identities could be matched with health diagnosis by using only zip code, DOB & gender. Just think ab the power of big data in #redistricting. Thx Ashwin Machanavajjhala!
