On 18 September 1944 a Dakota crashed in the field behind the monument. 24 men died in the crash, 6 US airmen and 18 British paratroopers. After the war the British were buried at Jonkerbos CWGC cemetery. The Americans were repatriated home or buried at Margraten Cemetery.
