#OTD in #history, 1774, the First Continental #Congress assembled in #Philadelphia. There, Patrick Henry gave voice to a newfound sentiment: “The distinctions between Virginians, Pennsylvanians, New Yorkers and New Englanders are no more. I am not a Virginian, but an American.”

Sixteen of the delegates who attended the opening meeting of the First Continental Congress #OTD in 1774 returned as members of the Second Continental Congress and later signed the Declaration of Independence. Their names can be found on Signer’s Island in Constitution Gardens.
