Demystifying Publishing: TRANSLATION RIGHTS! I’ve had several occasions in the past month where it became clear some people have no clue what we’re doing. Translation Rights (TR) is often the forgotten child in publishing. What we do: a tread 👩‍💻 1/10

Tanja Goossens (@tanjagoossens) 's Twitter Profile Photo

We DON’T translate books, we sell their translation rights. So let’s say, we have this beautiful novel by a British author and we hold their translation rights, we’ll contact publishers from all over the world to try and sell these rights. 2/10

Tanja Goossens (@tanjagoossens) 's Twitter Profile Photo

We negotiate terms (advances, royalties, etc), and close an agreement between foreign publisher and author. Once closed, the publisher can go ahead. Simply put: A foreign publisher acquiring translation rights gives them the right to translate the book. 3/10

You can think big territories like France, Germany, China and Japan, but also small territories like Mongolia, Kazachstan, Malta, Moldavië etc. 4/10

We can make a nice extra income for an author. People often only see the agent, editor and marketing behind an author, but don’t forgot the money TR can bring in on top of a U.K./US sale. And not to mention; how cool it is to see your book in a foreign language? 5/10

Tanja Goossens (@tanjagoossens) 's Twitter Profile Photo

When you start working in translation right, you generally start as assistant. Then executive, manager, agent, director/head of rights. An assistant salary normally starts around £24k in London, potentially a bit lower outside the capital. 6/10

Tanja Goossens (@tanjagoossens) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Be realistic about the job you’re applying for. Without experience, you won’t be able to apply for a manager or agent role. Start as assistant, or, when you’ve worked in a similar industry with transferable skills, as executive. 7/10

Tanja Goossens (@tanjagoossens) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Speaking a second (or third) language is beneficial but not a must, unless specified on a vacancy. We all communicate in English. 8/10

Tanja Goossens (@tanjagoossens) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Don’t apply for a translation rights job if you don’t know what it entails (yes, it happens a lot unfortunately but will save you the examples). We know lots of people like to get into the holy grail of editorial, but we as translation rights also have feelings! 9/10

Tanja Goossens (@tanjagoossens) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Authors, colleagues, publishing hopefuls: Translation Rights is as important as any other department. We are an incredible passionate bunch who love to make sure our beautiful books end up in as many international hands as possible and we love working with likeminded people. ❤️📚

Tanja Goossens (@tanjagoossens) 's Twitter Profile Photo

A fellow rights professional rightfully pointed out it includes travel✈️,which does happen in non-covid times, although ofc senior rights people will travel more than juniors. The prospect of this is super exciting (but shouldn't be just the reason to apply for the job though😉)
