Exciting news today - I passed my general exam! I was definitely nervous about my preparation going in and have struggled w/feelings of imposter syndrome throughout grad school so it’s a huge relief to hit this milestone and feel empowered move forward on my dissertation

I’m so excited to be in the Maldives this week participating in a workshop organized by the World Bank to explore digital technology solutions for local climate resilience. I’ll be presenting on the use of passive acoustics for coral reef monitoring.

@FnpMarieOH Folks, I’ve been diving In submersibles (eg the HOV Alvin) for 25 years. In general, the simpler the tool the better. A submersible is better off with robust, uncomplicated hardware.

Very excited to be presenting at #OSM24 this morning in the reef restoration session on the topic of using acoustic enrichment to boost coral larval settlement rates. I’m speaking in 206-207 at 9:50 - hope to see lots of folks there!

Researchers have discovered a new method that could encourage the restoration of degraded coral reef populations, which have been declining around the world due to record-high marine temperatures. trib.al/YA4e8Pl

Excellent work from Nadège Aoki, Aran Mooney et al. from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI): playing back healthy coral reef sound increases coral larvae settlement! 🪸 This has huge impact on coral reef restoration worldwide and the billion of people that depend directly on them!🌍

Really enjoyed getting to sit down and chat with Maddie about this and get into some of the nuances of how we might use sound enrichment to help coral reefs (spoiler alert: it's not a silver bullet, but we see great potential with this technique)

The saddest part of my job is seeing the ecosystem I love and live to protect dying in front of my eyes… The fourth global coral bleaching event has been confirmed. calacademy.org/press/releases…

🔍 Can you spot the #seahorse? Longsnout seahorses are not known for their swimming abilities. They stay safe by blending in with their surroundings– in this case, yellow sponges growing on the Frederiksted Pier in #StCroix! 📸 by Nadège Aoki © #WHOI
