A1. This is pretty huge and I feel the crux of the maternal mortality epidemic we are experiencing in this country. Colonizers stole our land, our food, our children and our mothers. This is perpetuated in part through the modern medical system. #MaternalJustice

A2.1 We know that access to culturally specific health care makes a difference. Indigenous families in part are delivering in hospitals far away from their home communities making it difficult to get to appointments, etc. #MaternalJustice

A2.2 Really what needs to happen is that high quality care needs to come back to community. We have pregnant people traveling hours for prenatal care. We have folks in Alaska that have to leave their community beginning at 37 weeks until they deliver their baby. #MaternalJustice

A2.3 When we think of historical trauma and genocide we often don’t discuss that our midwives and traditional birth keepers were often targeted. They helped to birth a healthy Native community and colonizers saw the power they held. #MaternalJustice

A3. This happens because the health care system is inherently racist. With an overwhelming number of providers being non-Native AND there being no requirements of racial equity training of medical staff across the board discrimination is bound to happen. #MaternalJustice

A4. LISTEN TO US!!! Know that we love our babies and want what is best for them. When we say something is wrong- don’t send us home. Trust that we know our bodies and what we need. #MaternalJustice

Q5. Absolutely, because the health and wellbeing of Native people conflicts with those that are in power. Our ancestors signed treaties ensuring future generations would be cared for and everyday those treaties are broken by the US government. #MaternalJustice

A8.1 We have very low breastfeeding rates in our community which we know is incredibly protective particularly when it comes to respiratory infections and SUID. Supporting the traditional practice of breastfeeding in our community will save lives. #MaternalJustice

A8.2 There is more research coming out showing that colonialism and racism is what puts our babies at risk of dying. It is not just our mothers that are dying from the daily injustices they experience but our babies too! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11… #MaternalJustice

A9. There is an incredible movement happening across Turtle Island. Indigenous people are reclaiming our bodies, our babies and our births. We have the ability to care for our own communities. Indigenous midwives, doulas and breastfeeding counselors are here! #MaternalJustice
