On this day in aviation history, January 5th, an altitude record of 11,690 feet was set by Joseph Eugene Carberry in 1916. He set this record in a Curtiss Jenny, which was originally produced as a training aircraft for the US Army.

On this day in aviation history, January 7th, a Boeing 747 lands at JFK International Airport, which is the first time since 1949 that a flight from mainland China to the United States is performed. It was 32 years since this had happened.
