Every topic being discussed in RPG Twitter was discussed, dissected, analyzed, & playtested in the seventies. Unfortunately, most of these independent zines didn't get a lot of coverage, most have been lost, and some of the most valuable ones are stuck in collectors' cabinets.

My friends, welcome back to Adventure Wargaming.

When I wrote Arbiter of Worlds for The Escapist 15 years ago, I was almost a lone voice crying out against railroading story-game mentality. Now there is a chorus of heroes singing the gospel of agency, and the song grows louder with every voice that joins!

Between the times of HG Wells Little Wars and when brands and ideologues drank the seas of creativity, before the sins of Hickman, there was once an age undreamed of. The days of high adventure, of Fantasy Adventure Wargaming, and diplomacy variants in clubhouses and by mail.

I fully expect the call to go out for vintage RPG enthusiasts to join the clubhouses and actually use the rules they claim to like, and we will get antipathy at best. They never actually played the games. We have to start over with new people.

There is a particularly nefarious and wrongheaded line of thought within the hobby that states the money you earn directly correlates with how valuable you are. This is blatantly false. Some people do things out of the goodness of their soul, not because money compels them to.

Man, seeing #folkdnd trending in the way it is is not exactly what I was going for lol
