Acadience, the literacy screener that Regis failed last year didn’t align him with any resources he wasn’t already years into waiting for at the DDSB and missed that he was already a skilled reader. They set him up to fail. That has an impact. Pay attention, friends

Almost 4 years into waiting for core clinical services through the OAP, 3 years waiting on school based rehab in the DDSB so far and nothing but another waitlist for Extensive Needs… Tell me again how well it’s working.

This library book came home from school today. After so many trips to the library, a pathway for Regis’ speech producing AAC is emerging. This feels monumental!

Ask the parents of a disabled child in Ontario what it’s like to navigate our underfunded schools and the inadequate special education programs we’ve cut to shreds for far too long.

Massive shoutout to BGC Durham for helping Regis to thrive this fall with his adaptive swimming lessons! He LOVED every second in the pool, his instructor was an absolute star, his skills are through the roof and he is all around safer near the water. Thank you!

At school children don’t only use their voices to learn. Why should Regis, as an assistive device user, be held to a double standard of ‘AAC is only for programming’ at school? We’re roaring into 2026 ready to level some of the gross institutionalized ableism at the DDSB!

For families reliant on assistive tech, like ours, this ableist message is gross and out of date. In our home technology is embedded in all of these every day activities. You CAN do better, DDSB!

Pictured, ‘Inclusive’ Student Services at the DDSB…From the parking lot right through the thought leadership, nothing but unnecessary barriers placed intentionally. If you don’t get it, you’re lucky!

‘If the device is working but there’s some piece in place or things are happening where it’s not working all the time we keep that device with the student’. Yikes, no? Functioning assistive tech MUST be a given.
