Happy first week of LGBTQ+ History Month! This month is both a celebration of how far this amazing community has come and a reflection on how we can continue to fight for LGBTQ+ equality both in and out of the workplace♥️🧡💛💚💙💜

Today I had a patient who said he’s been nervous about his appointment since he saw it was with a man. At first I was like woah, but he explained he’s gay and feels intimidated by straight men getting in his personal space sometimes, but he saw my NHS pride badge, so felt safe 😭

As a way to encourage our staff to educate themselves about LGBT+ issues and history during this month we will be recommending films, books and T.V programmes.

These will range from fact heavy documentaries to easy watch sit-coms to autobiographies to help suit everyone’s ability to engage

Facts are very important but also being able to read or watch a situation from the view of an LGBT+ individual will also be just as educational in terms of helping us understand each other!

This weeks recommendations are as follows: Films: Paris is Burning and The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson. Both of these are documentaries which explore key historical events in LGBT+ history📽📽📽

T.V: It’s a Sin and Sex Education. It’s a Sin shows a group of friends as they navigate through the AIDS crisis in the 80s and Sex Education is a series which does a good job of explaining sexualities which are lesser understood within society!

Books: The Danish Girl by David Ebershoff and Gay Like Me: A Father Writes to His Son by Richie Jackson both of which give personal accounts of what it was like a different time periods to be LGBT+📚

It’s taken us longer than we’d planned but we’re getting ready to launch #NHSScotlandPrideBadge later this year. It’s our promise to challenge, evolve and continue to improve the experience of both staff and patients, whatever their identity. #LGBTHM21 @DrMikeFarquhar

This weeks LGBT+ media recommendations: Films: Disclosure - a documentary that explores Hollywood’s impact on the trans community and The Miseducation of Cameron Post - a film depicting the events of a gay conversion camp.

T.V programmes: Orange is the New Black - A very good series which well depicts what it is like to be LGBT+ alongside exploring other issues and Rupauls Drag Race - this program is a Drag Queen competition which well represents this side of the LGBT community

Books: Women Don’t Owe You Pretty by Florence Given - this book takes a brutally honest take what it is like to be LGBT and Becoming a Man: The Story of a Transition by P Carl - a book which gives a first hand account their gender transition.

Tip 7: Be concious of your language. You are never going to know it all and not make mistakes, let's be real. Make the effort, whether it's a new name, new pronoun or using gender neutral language. If you get it wrong, apologise quickly and move on. #LGBTHistoryMonth

This weeks suggestions! Film: Philadelphia- a groundbreaking Film when released in 1993 and The Boys in the Band explores gay culture through the story of a party

T.V programmes: Pose - a new york take on being LGBT during the aids crisis (my top pick of everything suggested this month) and Big Mouth - for animation lovers this is educational with LGBT+ issues and sex education!

Books: Girl, Women, Other by Bernadine Evaristo- follows the lives and struggles of 12 very different people and If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo is the story of a trans person trying to fit in.
