I want to lead the people of this country away from the quicksands of Socialism.

Nazism (national Socialism) and communism (international socialism) were but two sides of the same coin.

I don't like strident women.

1989 will be remembered for decades as the year when half the people of half our continent threw off their chains. The messages on our banners in 1979 - freedom, opportunity, family, enterprise, ownerships - are now inscribed on the banners in Leipzig, Warsaw, Budapest & Moscow.

We Conservatives hate unemployment.

It is our job to go about telling everybody to obey the law.

Nobody, not even the most hardened Labour apologist, can wish to see a repetition of the cruelty and callousness of this winter. None of us can be content with a society where such things happen without check or penalty. In that sense I am a reformer and I am offering a change.

I do not believe that even the free and ordered society which as a party we are trying to foster can satisfy the deepest human needs. I do not think that even this society will be able to sustain itself unless it keeps its religious foundations in good repair.

What makes good neighbours is often good fences.

The colour of someone's skin should not determine his or her political rights.

Every generation must restate its values in light of present challenges, but also in light of past experience. There has never been greater need for us Conservatives to do so than there is today.

I place a profound belief - indeed a fervent faith - in the virtues of self reliance and personal independence. On these is founded the whole case for the free society.

People from my sort of background needed Grammar schools to compete with children from privileged homes like Shirley Williams and Anthony Wedgwood Benn.

Socialism is, in its essence, an attack not only upon British enterprise, but upon the right of the ordinary man or woman to breathe freely without having a harsh, clammy hand clapped across their mouths and nostrils.

The real case against socialism is not its economic inefficiency, though on all sides there is evidence of that. Much more fundamental is its basic immorality.

Unless we change our ways and our direction, our greatness as a nation will soon be a footnote in the history books, a distant memory of an offshore island, lost in the mists of time like Camelot, remembered kindly for its noble past.
