Autism affects 1 in 36 children in the United States. Boys are 4x more likely to be diagnosed than girls. Autism can be diagnosed before a child reaches the age of 2 however, most are diagnosed after the age of 4. #AutismAwareness #keyportpublicschools

You’d be surprised at what we get excited about in our classroom! The “little things” are HUGE and every milestone is celebrated as well as shared. We are so proud of our students and make sure they’re proud of themselves! #AutismAwarenessMonth #keyportpublicschools

There are 3 different levels of Autism. Doctors use these levels to define the amount of support an autistic person may want/need. #AutismAwareness #autismacceptance #keyportpublicschools

There is a spectrum when it comes to Autism because there is a wide variation in the type and severity of symptoms people experience. It is experienced differently by different people. #AutismAwareness #keyportpublicschools #autismacceptance

There are many ways to support children and adults with autism. Keeping a routine, explaining everything before and as it happens, helping them feel safe and asking clear questions are just a few important ways to support those with autism. #keyportpublicschools #AutismAwareness

Autustic children and adults often “stim”. Stimming is a repetitive physical movement and/or sound that can be calming or an expression of their feelings. There are 5 categories of stimming and this week I’ll share more information on each. #AutismAcceptance #AutismAwareness

Tactile stimming uses the persons sense of touch. An autistic child or adult will stim because they are seeking to cope with their emotions or deal with an overwhelming situation. Nail biting, rubbing something soft like a stuffed animal and popping a pop it toy are all tactile.
