A2: The checkpoint that stands out to me is "facilitates personal coping skills and strategies". I like to model healthy coping skills, my students are given time to journal, and we open class with check in questions to create community and support each other. #CaArtsEdChat

A3: UDL and SEL go hand in hand. When barriers are broken down and access is granted, it will automatically help students feel better about themselves and their learning. This leads to better self-management. #CaArtsEdChat

A4: I am always inspired by the musical Les Miserables. The music, the lyrics, the story...it is truly beautiful. It also happened to be my senior year musical as well. #CaArtsEdChat

Thoroughly enjoyed The Little Foxes South Coast Repertory last night! Grateful for the Theatre Access program and the opportunity to take a group of students with me to see professional live theater!

A1: Hi everyone! Chris Hixson, high school theatre teacher here. The only thing that comes to mind with gum drops is Willy Wonka. #NationalGumdropDay #CaArtsEdChat

A2: I see the impact of our thoughts, feelings, and experiences affecting the way we create art but also perceive art. #CaArtsEdChat

A3: "skills needed to complete..." That small phrase hits home. Too often I see students give up or stall in the creative process and they don't know how to move forward. Arguably, this where the teacher comes in and mentors the students through the stuck point. #CaArtsEdChat

A4: The EQ "...balancing what is known and what is discovered..." I wonder how we measure the growth in these SEL skills? Like, how could I show objective improvement in these areas? #CaArtsEdChat

A4: I’d like to think I encourage it through daily practice. We start by centering/warming up/beginning with a clean slate and then we create/get messy/perform/revise/etc. #CaArtsEdChat

A1: Hello! Chris Hixson, high school theatre teacher here! Today, we have a choir festival at our school and here is a pic of my most recent play directed by senior students. #ArtsinEducationMonth #CaArtsEdChat

A2: I am celebrating #ArtsinEducationMonth by doing what I do best: creating and supporting the arts. March is super busy for our school's music program and visual arts classes. In theatre, we do what we can so other programs can shine. #CaArtsEdChat

A3: I'm surrounded by kind students and colleagues who do things everyday. Students stick around to help clean, ask what projects they can work on, support and lift up one another. #SELWeek #CaArtsEdChat

A4: Educators need to hear "You're doing great!" far more often. Teacher burnout is a big deal across the country (and world). So...you're doing great! I appreciate what all of you do for supporting the arts. #CaArtsEdChat

I pray for the Keller family as they say bye to Tim. Gratitude is not strong enough a word to describe the impact he has had on my life through his books and teaching. I grieve with thousands.

With great sadness we mourn the loss of TGC co-founder Timothy Keller, 72, who died today, more than three years after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

This NYT piece is an endless stream of bangers. I swear, one of the more destructive recent cultural trends has been the combined push to frame all distress or discomfort as mental illness, and then to encourage people to form their identity around being “mentally ill.”
