Couple of Dorset surprises in the last couple of days, Broad-leaved Helleborine (Epipactis helleborine) discovered at the wild end of my allotment and a queen Brown-banded Carder Bee (Bombus humilis) retrieved from the green waste bin!

Dorset Lecanora uncertainty again! All C-, K+/- yell, no Pd so couldn't check, UV mauve (but photographing icy-blue). Wondered sinuosa for Q3 but LBGI3 says pycnidia unknown. All hybocarpa (but LBGI3 says UV+ efflorescent and doesn't mention pycnidia)? Mark Powell Anthony Speca

Following on from my earlier Lecanora post these are polarised micrographs of both the pale (Q1A) and the darker apothecia (Q1B) in Q1. They were on a 2 cm diam branch from a roadside Oak, C-, K - or + very faintly yellow Mark Powell Anthony Speca

Dorset, operculate fungus on Xanthoria parietina on several Oak twigs, but is it lichenicolous? Spores/conidia were brown, globose and with thick wall, c.12 µm in diameter and the hyphae(?) in the third photo was c.5 µm wide. Mark Powell Alejandro Huereca Delgado Fay Newbery George R. L. Greiff

Decided to record the lichens and #lichenicolous fungi on wind-dropped twigs and small branches from a mature Dorset roadside Oak. So far 42 species including 15 LF's and Licea parasitica (lichenicolous myxomycete) - and finally found Gonatophragmium lichenophilum! Mark Powell

#lichenicolous Small, brown, gall-like swellings on Lecidella elaeochroma apothecia, spores green, 1-septate, (8-)10-12 x (4-)5-6 µm, LF asci among Lecidella asci. Initially hoped Lichenochora lecidellae but at least some asci 8-spored. Fay Newbery Alejandro Huereca Delgado Mark Powell

Another #lichenicolous fungus from Oak tree getting species list for. Tremella ramalinae on Ramalina fastigiata, though the micrographs from 1st image are poor they show enough detail of the basidia septation to confirm ID. Waiting to see how galls in 2nd mature before examining

#Lichen Parmeliopsis from the (now two) roadside Oaks I'm recording. Gathered dry and keyed to P. hyperopta in LGBI3 but habitat seemed wrong. Then read the Lichens marins description, wetted specimen and realised it was Parmeliopsis ambigua! The British Lichen Society Mark Powell Anthony Speca

I'll take it as a complement that I'm one of the people featuring in this secret dossier. The agrochemical industry up to their usual sordid tricks... theguardian.com/us-news/2024/s…

Europe’s oldest marine reserve, located in County Cork, is being to left to decay. Really dismal reading. A shambles where it appears that there is no single govt entity taking the lead to manage, protect and restore this treasure. Infuriating. thejournal.ie/investigates-l…
