To the many PhD students starting this month: choosing a mentoring lab - which is THE crucial decision - should be made based on the atmosphere in the lab, the attention you will get from the mentor, what they can teach you, funding, and the lab’s topic, probably in that order.

Genuinely caring about students should be a non-negotiable qualification for a career in academia. Full stop. No amount of research achievement or creativity can substitute for caring about the professional development and well-being of those we teach and mentor.

I keep thinking about people returning to the classrooms where they hid & thought they could be killed by an armed person at any moment. Returning to talk about chemistry, or writing, or art. There shouldn’t be a playbook for this, and yet, here we are.
