As the Super Eagles begin Nigeria's quest for a fourth AFCON title, we revisit 1980, the year Nigeria won its first title. We spoke to Segun Odegbami, a star player of that 1980 team, and three fans who witnessed the historic campaign 45 years ago. ⬇️ archivi.ng/the-archivist/…

No one comes close. Fela made the purest, most radical political art in Nigerian history. Bonus points that you can also bop to the very political music. And he did it across multiple periods when he had so much to lose, and he lost enough. He put skin in the game like mad.

In 1980, the Eagles struck early against Morocco. Felix Owolabi scored just eight minutes into the game, and the team held on through a tense ninety minutes to secure a historic place in the final. History about to repeat itself?

35 years ago in Kwara State, a night of celebration became a nightmare when a building with 14 sleeping children caught fire. One man stepped in to stop a tragedy. This is the story of Saka Daramola.

This is the most exciting thing I've written in one million years. And while the story appears to centre one man, he's only a small cog in a big, big machine we all inhabit. Read, maybe 🔫

From writing this story, heavily reliant on archival material, I landed on a hot take: if this story happened today, I’m not sure today’s media would have been able to do the kind of deep reporting that made it possible for me to reconstruct it with incredibly rich detail.

Gowon losing this election was such a big deal in 1993 that many publications wrote feature stories about it, but if you checked his Wikipedia page right now, there's not a single mention of him running. You can catch gaps in Nigerian history like this on Archivi.ng.
