Maaaan. These were some intense episodes of Time Force. A lot of suspense. At one point I briefly thought they were actually gonna kill off Mr. Collins. It’s crazy I remember this arc ending and then 9/11 happening a few days later.

Group #1 has the majority (I’d like to hope) in that theyll respond postively to someone sharing their love for Rider/Sentai/Ultra/Metal. They love their heroes and they love meeting others who like them too. There’s a special bond formed for liking something so unknown to most.

Then there’s Group #2. They find toku in whatever way they discover it and then hold it tightly to their chest and say “this is MY thing”. They become overly protective of toku. Some are also called gatekeepers. This causes tension between other fans and the 2 groups will clash.

I theorize we have seen an uptick in Group 2 due to Tokusatsu getting more and more notice in the US (Ultra w Mill Creek, Shouts Sentai, and Tokushoutsu to name a few). This results in more eyes on these series and Tokusatsu will in turn become less niche and more known.

To Group 1, this is seen as a hopeful accomplishment. More fans to interact with. To Group 2, it is seen as devaluement. Because they aren’t able to say “this is *my* thing”. Even though it was never just theirs to begin with. They can’t have their special niche interest anymore.

My last point to make is this. People are clamoring for a representative of the western toku comm. A person who is the “go-to”. I don’t think there’s a “eastern” rep so not sure why this is necessary but I digress. I don’t believe a rep for us needs to be a single person.

The beautiful thing about toku is that there’s something for everyone and its impossible to find two people with the exact same opinions on any season or series or character. You just can’t. For everyone to feel truly represented, there must be a group. It can’t just be a person.

We have a lot to figure out in this new age of toku. Mistakes will be made. Things will have to be fixed. But I cannot stress enough that we as a community have to agree on one thing. We have to act like the heroes we look up to. We must embody their spirit and values.

Support official releases of your favorite shows. Show the new faces what it means to be a Kamen Rider, what it means to be a Sentai member, what it means to be Ultraman. In a world currently filled to the brim with division, be impartial.

Tokusatsu is not just *your* special interest. It’s something that a lot of people are passionate about in different ways. Think of your favorite hero and talk to those people like you think those heroes would talk to them. Be welcoming and show them your Tokusatsu spirit. /end
