Today we went outside to notice our surroundings and ask questions about the world around us. Students studied a natural object for 4 minutes and furiously wrote down questions they had!

Today block 1 continued their work with the order of operations by doing a “puzzle time” activity. They used the correct order of operations to decode a joke… they loved it!

Today in science we talked about what scientists do. We started an online termite investigation where we became scientists and asked questions and made observations about the behavior of termites. We tested multiple variable to see why termites were attracted to a certain path.

Block 2 killed it with their 1st Open Middle problem today! At first, Ss were upset that they couldn’t figure it out, but then they really committed to finding a solution! Ss who didn’t find an answer said they were going home and were determined they’d figure it out!

We are in the STEM Lab for our second rotation today! We are: -coding robots to pick up a magnet -building the largest volume out of straws and connectors -simulating Earth and Moon rotation with a PhET Sims -finding volume with task cards

We are using the Star Chart to track stars and their brightness. We learned how far a light year really is and why some stars appear brighter in our night sky than others.

Today, Block 2 packed rectangular prisms with unit cubes. We discovered that however many cubes fit into the prism, that is the volume of the prism.

Last week we celebrated College Go week at SCI. Students supported many universities…but only ONE remains supreme in my opinion #hoosiers 🔴⚪️

Today students used modeling clay to observe Earth’s day and night cycle. We used a flashlight as the “sun” and then rotated our Earth on its axis. What we noticed? The sun doesn’t actually move, WE do!

Sometimes as a PTO member you get the love back! Seeing these staff members stop and take time to get a picture makes us so happy. We ❤️you SCI!

What's with this "new" way of dividing?

We had a blast at our Maker Playground trip! We learned how to use a drill press & how to code a robot with a z axis. We also designed a logo for our own business and made a stop motion promo video to go along with it. Thanks Jennifer Suskovich for all of your hard work making this happen!

First day back from spring break? We are getting new jobs assigned to us. We discussed with the previous employee what the role of the job looks like. Pencil sharpener? Got it. Math game organizer? Nailed it. Miss Parker’s water bottle filler? The fav job 🤩 I ❤️ these helpers!

B1 is learning about absolute value today! We are using sea level as 0 and representing objects that are above or below sea level. How far away are these things from sea level? How much would something have to move to be the same distance from sea level as another thing?

Thanks to Fishers High School for their Day of Service students! They came to teach us some Spanish basics!

We are starting our photosynthesis projects! We are working to model the process of photosynthesis and some of the key elements involved: water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, sunlight, glucose, and chloroplasts.

For staff appreciation week we wanted the SCI staff to race through the month of May! Today we kicked off the week with bagels from Panera.

We are on day 2️⃣ of planning for our huts. This engineering challenge requires students to build a hut that has a working door and is 5” tall. We learned about the engineering vocab words “success criteria” and “constraints” to help us understand engineering better!

Putting the finishing touches on our huts today. Best way to spend a Friday 🙌🏼 We will see if they survive the windstorm (hair dryer 😉) on Monday!
