It’s clear that “citizen science” is playing an important role in filling knowledge gaps. It would be great to see someone sequencing the samples from wastewater and watersheds that might be showing peaks of flu A in March/April.

Vaccines help children lead happy and healthy lives, but declining coverage since the pandemic is leaving millions of children at risk of preventable diseases. It's time to catch up and recommit to making basic immunization accessible for all.

Trump did say it, but he NEVER asked me to slow down testing - in fact, he supported our efforts to massively scale testing and develop innovative models to get testing to every corner of the country. I tell the full story in my book. brettgiroir.com

Terrific write up of H5N1 today by Helen Branswell 🇨🇦 (of course)

However in it one of the CDC interviewees refers to wastewater samples that turn H5N1 positive due to birds as false positives. I disagree!!! If birds are infected around cows, those are highly relevant samples.…

Sequencing directly from rapid antigen test strips is something that Admiral Brett Giroir Brett Giroir (testing czar for US in 2020/21) was first pushing for in conversations w him.

It’s great to see it now being proven out - as well as so many of the efforts that he initiated…

Sequencing directly from Rapid Antigen Test strips!

A major concern of Rapid Antigen Tests has been the loss of public health data such as virus sequencing

However, Rapid Tests do not have to imply a loss in Public Health Data - reporting and sequencing can still move…

Another good perspective on the current, spreading outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus in the food supply. Great points by Michael Osterholm Michael Mina Andrew Pekosz by Lisa Jarvis in @bloomberg Bloomberg bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…

I’m happy to see Dept. of Agriculture release raw H5N1 sequence data yesterday.

However, as far as I can tell, key elements are missing:
-actual location (not just “USA”)
-date
-sample type

to name a few

Hopefully this is forthcoming soon and hopefully all new sequences will be posted in…

The problem with infectious disease scares is a) they happen ALL the time and b) most of them flame out.

But this (H5N1/ Bird Flu) is starting to feel a lot like 2020 again. And we seem to be making the same testing and communication mistakes. 🤦🏽‍♂️
