Masterminds (1997) is one of those films I forget is actually real. Die Hard in a private school with Vincent Kartheiser as a hacker/skater teen hero. Patrick Stewart is the villain, and rips off his suit to reveal a Man United t-shirt, before attempting a getaway on a quadbike.

Some fun / odd news — the BFI has selected Nebula-75 as a key work for official preservation in the national archives as part of the Our Screen Heritage project. From single living room short during lockdown, to Japan, to official preservation…It’s travelled 33 million miles!

I honestly don't understand how anyone affords to go to film festivals. For a few years, I was very lucky to have an employer who saw the value in it as personal development/research. Now, I just don't have the spare money to waste on going.

Now on the Mediatheque at BFI Southbank: a curated collection celebrating the work of animator Emma Calder, who passed away last year. A near complete retrospective of her work, from Madame Potatoe to The Queen's Monastery to her final finished work, Beware of Trains.

One week 'til our Animation at War screening of WHEN THE WIND BLOWS at the Barbican on Wednesday 29th. I’ll be hosting a ScreenTalk afterwards with Nicolette Jones and Jez Stewart, discussing Raymond Briggs, British animation and this devastatingly powerful film.

Four months on, and we're still seeing David Lynch tribute screenings and cinema seasons popping up. This extended period of mourning/celebration is testament not just to how beloved he was, but to the benefits of having a filmography that is easily available for cinemas to book.
