New issue of IUCN SSC Shark Specialist Group, we wrote a note about our book on sawfishes in #CostaRica+Central America, check out the note (iucnssg.org/shark-news.htm… page 51)! It's meant to be a reference tool for a future national conservation plan of sawfishes 💙💥 CIMAR-UCR Mario Espinoza

Sharks are in trouble! 🦈 Many species are crucial to maintaining life-giving coral reefs 🪸 & seagrass meadows 🌱 - important habitats that sustain our oceans - but surveys have shown that #sharks are functionally extinct on 20% of #coralreefs globally.

We deployed more than 22,000 baited remote underwater video systems ( BRUVS) at 391 reefs in 67 nations and territories to investigate how human pressures affect sharks and rays. We estimate the depletion of shark and ray populations and investigated how assemblages changed.

The results showed that the main shark species that live on coral reefs have declined globally by 60-70%, making them eligible for listing as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. But the level of depletion varied greatly between nations. IUCN SSC Shark Specialist Group

What we do/don’t know re: sharks ecological roles. Much predation/fear by big coastal sharks, by western unis, little else. Must protect big individuals & species’ outsized roles. MPAs crucial; engage communities to improve outcomes & shark perceptions tinyurl.com/52e295m3

Just off the press in Science Magazine tinyurl.com/52e295m3 Sharks play diverse roles in aquatic ecosystems. Management and conservation should go beyond abundance metrics and move towards rebuilding and sustaining shark function and role in these systems. 📷Laurent Ballesta
