Pevensey Castle, East Sussex. Built around 290 AD by the Romans and reoccupied in 1066 by the Normans, it had been abandoned by the late 16th century and remained a crumbling, partly overgrown ruin until it was acquired by the state in 1925.

Ramon de Miraval (c. 1135-1220) was a troubadour and a poor knight from Carcassonne. He was well honored and appreciated by the Count of Toulouse and by all the great barons of that region. He is one of the troubadours who have the most surviving works. BnF, Ms. 854 fol. 67v
